Digital nomadism is a lifestyle in which people work remotely, having the freedom to travel and live wherever they want, as long as they have access to the internet. This concept is closely related to the development of online communication and collaboration technologies, which allow individuals to carry out their professional activity without being tied to a fixed workplace.
This lifestyle gained momentum during the pandemic, when many employees were forced to work from home, and the idea of traveling while working became increasingly attractive. Today, those who choose to be digital nomads do so to combine work and travel without being bound by a fixed office schedule.
According to the Emergency Ordinance no. 194/2002 on the status of foreigners in Romania, a digital nomad is a foreigner who is employed under an employment contract with a company registered outside Romania and who provides services using information and communication technology or who owns a company registered outside Romania, in which he/she provides services using information and communication technology and can carry out the employee's work or the company's work remotely using information and communication technology.
Conditions to become a digital nomad in Romania
If you want to become a digital nomad in Romania, the authorities offer a long-stay visa for non-EU citizens who want to live and work in the country as a remote worker but have to fulfill certain conditions such as:
